Monotypes: Nudes

Also known as the most painterly method among the print making techniques, monotypes are essentially printed paintings.  The characteristic of this method is that no two prints are alike.  Although images can be similar, printing editions is not possible.  The appeal of the monotype is the unique translucency that creates a quality of light very different from a painting or a print.  What intrigues the artist about this media its spontaneity and the opportunity to combine printmaking, painting, and drawing to create one image.

All of artist Steve Martin’s monotypes are created under the supervision of a master printer.  Once the monotype has been named, signed and numbered one of one, the master printer certifies the piece with a chop mark and records the image in their archival records.  This important step adds provenance to the artwork for the future.  Martin feels that with every trip into the studio he has discovered a new direction to explore with this media.  Already he has created six separate yet related series consisting of over 1000 unique and original images.  Martin’s monotypes are represented in hundreds of private, corporate, and museum collections around the world.
